Personal hygiene products and cosmetics often hide harsh chemicals that are absorbed into your skin and make their way into your bloodstream.
The David Suzuki foundation reports that one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors (1).
Even natural skincare care brands like Burt’s Bees and Lush use ingredients that are known allergens, hormone disruptors and cause organ system toxicity (2,3).
1. Massage oil
Coconut oil is the perfect consistency to be used as a massage oil. Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties make it perfect for soothing sore muscles (1).
2. Toothpaste
Most toothpastes on the market contain fluoride preservatives and coloring. However, studies are showing that coconut oil contains enzymes that contribute to better oral health and prevent tooth decay. You can even use it to make your own vegan toothpaste.
3. Insect repellent
Coconut oil repels mosquitoes and other annoying bugs. Mixed with rosemary and lemongrass, the oil can be as effective as chemical repellents such as DEET. The oil can also relieve the pain and itch of bug bites. Find out how to make your own bug repellent here.
4. Lip Balm
Rather than use Chapstick or Vaseline -which are toxic and don’t actually hydrate your lips- nourish them with coconut oil.
5. Stretch Mark Prevention
Coconut oil is often used by pregnant women to hydrate their skin and prevent stretch marks. Simply rub it directly into your skin 3-4 times a day and let it soak up.
