What Is Castor Oil?

Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained by pressing the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis).

It’s high in omega-6 fatty acids and ricinoleic acid. The oil penetrates into follicles to thicken and strengthen eyebrows and lashes. In fact, it’s commonly used to prevent hair loss.

How Does It Work?

A 2000 study found that ricinoleic acid has “capsaicin-like” anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe irritated skin (1). Unlike other oils that contain only a small amount of this compound, castor oil is made of 90% ricinoleic acid (2).

It can also treat common skin conditions like dermatitis, acne and fungal or bacterial infection (3,4,5). Castor oil is also commonly used to speed wound healing and face keloid scars (6).

Since it contains vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega-6 and omega-9, the oil is said to speed hair growth by 3-5x the normal rate with as little as 1-2 applications a week (5).

How To Use

First of all, make sure to use a hexane free, organic and cold pressed castor oil, which can be found in health food stores, online and specialty beauty supply shops.

Apply nightly to your brow and lashes after rinsing with water and patting dry. The oil acts as a cleanser and moisturizer, so you don’t have to wash your face before applying it.

Within a month of daily use, you should see visible hair growth and within 3 months you’ll have lush lashes and eyebrows.
