The positive link between Omega-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular health is well-established. Doctors and researchers are now examining other potential health benefits of the popular supplement in the hopes of treating and preventing other conditions.
By utilizing a new form of brain scanning called single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), scientist can measure how and where blood flows through the brain. Recently, researchers identified Omega-3s as a possible preventative treatment against neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
A study was conducted with 166 participants who were given two different concentrations of Omega-3s. Brain scans conducted during the trial found “statistically significant relationships” between Omega-3 levels and blood circulation in regions of the brain associated with memory, learning, and cognitive function.
Alzheimer’s disease rates are expected to triple in the next couple of decades, and as of yet there are no proven preventative treatments or cures. According to Dr. William Harris, co-author of the study, “This study opens the door to the possibility that relatively simple dietary changes could favorably impact cognitive function.”
